Makar Sankranti, a festival which is celebrated with great enthusiasm at Yuvajyothi on 14th January 2025. This vibrant occasion was organized to raise awareness and significance of the festival. The primary aim was to provide the children with a meaningful experience of the festival’s spirit, focusing on fun and learning through regional practices such as kite flying and enjoying traditional sweets. Fr. Paul spoke about the importance of the day and also highlighted the safety concerns surrounding the use of nylon manja while flying kites.
1. Kite Flying:
To bring the tradition of Makar Sankranti alive, children at Yuvajyothi were distributed colourful kites to enjoy the popular custom of kite flying, which is an integral part of the festival. Kites, symbolizing the joy and freedom of the season, were provided to all the children as part of the celebration. The children were excited and filled with joy as they were taken to the open ground to fly the kites. The younger children who needed a bit of guidance were assisted by the Staff. The air was filled with laughter, as children experienced the joy of flying kites and watching them soar.
2. Distribution of Til Ladoo:
In keeping with the traditional customs of Makar Sankranti, til ladoos (sesame and jaggery sweets) were prepared and distributed among the children. These sweets, symbolizing sweetness and harmony, were shared with everyone present. The festival also provided an opportunity for the children to learn more about the importance of Makar Sankranti.
Conclusion: The Makar Sankranti celebration at Yuvajyothi was filled with fun, learning, and joy. The children not only enjoyed flying kites and eating delicious sweets but also gained valuable insight into the cultural significance of the festival.
